Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful and debilitating disorder that afflicts more than one million people. It is the result of a pinching of the median nerve in the hand and can cause pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and inflammation.

There are a variety of treatment options available to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, from conservative care to advanced surgical techniques. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, a hand specialist will typically recommend conservative treatment options first and progress to more aggressive techniques if symptoms persist.

Common conservative treatment methods for carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Getting a cortisone injection to reduce inflammation
  • Taking anti-inflammatory medication to decrease inflammation and symptoms
  • Using a wrist brace to improve stabilization

If conservative care is unsuccessful or the pain you are experiencing worsens, carpal tunnel surgery may be necessary.
