The Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia, PC was founded in 1973 by Dr. Loui G. Bayne. Dr. Bayne was a pioneer and noted expert in the field of hand surgery and specifically pediatric hand surgery. His main interests were in congenital differences of the hand, lecturing and publishing extensively on the subject. Many of his articles remain classics in the field today. He adored working with adult and pediatric patients, both in his office and at the Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center Hand Clinic which he founded, directed and staffed until his retirement in 2001. Today, the clinic is run by the physicians of The Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia.

Dr. Bayne was a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He received his Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctor degrees from the University of Arkansas, where he was a star quarterback on the football team. He was a member of the Army Air Corps, but was discharged in 1945 after he contracted rheumatic fever, an experience he would later say inspired him to enter medicine. Dr. Bayne served his internship at St. Louis Children's Hospital and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Tulane Orthopaedic Service at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.
A lover of people, Dr. Bayne was an instructor of the orthopaedic residency training program at Georgia Baptist Hospital (now Atlanta Medical Center), a clinician in the Georgia Crippled Children's Unit, and a clinical professor of orthopaedics at Emory University. He also served as a clinical lecturer in the Department of Orthopaedics at Tulane University. He was deeply involved with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and served on the Congenital Deformities Committee throughout the 1980's.
Dr. Bayne was the recipient of the Wood W. Lovell Award at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in 1996 and the prestigious 1996 Hardman Cup Award given by the Medical Association of Georgia to the individual that has made an outstanding contribution to the art and science of medicine. He was a member of numerous orthopaedic organizations, including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, The American Orthopaedic Association, SICOT (International Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology), and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Bayne embodied the characteristics that many strive for but few attain: honor, integrity, compassion, and warmth. The physicians at The Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia - Doctors Costas, Lourie, Peljovich, Klugman and Ratner - are committed to preserving these most cherished characteristics and to furthering Doctor Bayne's goal of bettering the lives of all patients with whom they have the pleasure of working. |
